Reverend Carl Mitchell
Allnoch, C.S.B.
Class of 1927
Rev.
Carl Mitchell Allnoch, C.S.B. was born in Victoria, Texas, on December
15, 1908. Father Allnoch was named after his grandfather, J.D. Mitchell,
a famous naturalist. After graduating from St. Thomas High School
in 1927, he joined the Basilian Fathers, receiving a B.A. degree from
Assumption College, University of Western Ontario in 1932. Father
Allnoch took theology at St. Basil's Seminary, Toronto, Canada, from
1932-1936. He was ordained to priesthood in Houston, December 21,
1935. All but two years of his priestly life were spent at St. Thomas
as teacher, coach, athletic director, principal and superior.
Father Allnoch received his M.A. Degree in education
from the University of Houston in 1943. He established a trade school
at St. Thomas during World War II, and was assistant pastor of St.
Anne's Church in Houston from 1948-1950. He returned to St. Thomas
High School as principal from 1959-1967. He was cofounder of the Texas
Catholic Interscholastic League. Father Carl built the original St.
Thomas Stadium in 1937, and constructed the multipurpose auditorium
building on campus in 1960. He died on January 12, 1969
Father Allnoch Allnoch's basic philosophy was best expressed
in his principal's letter to graduating students in 1964.
"We trust that you have learned to love God
above all things, and furthermore, to love your neighbor as yourselves;
that you realize that self-discipline is essential for a mature person
and finally, that you have used your talents wisely, so that you may
attain that excellence which still remains a challenge to you."
The many students and parents who knew and loved Father
Carl Allnoch as a priest, a teacher, a friend, but most of all as
a wonderful man, established Father Carl Mitchell Allnoch Memorial
Scholarship Fund in March of 1969 to perpetuate his memory and continue
his work.
