| Mr. William A. Bernrieder
Class of 1916
Born on June 22, 1900, son of John and Johanna Black Bernrieder,
pioneer Houstonians. Class of 1916 St. Thomas High School. Studied
law at the Houston Law School. Spent 22 years in the Naval Reserve
including 5 years with the regular navy in World War II, serving on
the staffs of five Admirals including Admiral Wm. F. Halsey, Jr. Received
the prized Letter of Commendation with Ribbon from Admiral Chester
W. Nimitz. From 1930-1933, Assisted Admiral Richard E. Byrd on his
nationwide lecture tour.
Assisted the mayor of Houston from 1923-29; later served as City
Treasurer and Director of Civil Sevice under Mayor Oscar Holcombe.
With him he established the first police academy: One of the five
founders of the Houston Naval Reserve Unit; originated the idea of
naming a cruiser in honor of the city of Houston. Married Mattie Jane
Lee, June 7, 1937.
As a veteran realtor, he was instrumental in acquiring 21 seperate
parcels of property for St. Joseph's Hospital since 1937. Helped to
establish the retreat movement in the Galveston Diocese. A life member
of nine organizations and active in nine others. Listed in Who's Who
in Texas and in 1937 made the who's who among America's Young Men.
Inducted into Hall of Honor of St. Thomas High School February 13,
1977.
