(Dave) Marr
Class of 1950
As a professional golfer on the PGA Tour, television commentator,
golf course architect and businessman Mr. Dave Marr has distinguished
himself as the most celebrated athlete to have graduated from St.
Thomas High School.
While at St. Thomas Mr. Marr was on the honor roll, captain of the
golf team and member of the Letterman's Club. Following graduation,
he attended Rice Institute and the University of Houston. At age of
nineteen years (1953) he began his professional golfing career by
accepting a postion at Westwood Country Club in Westwood, New Jersey.
He won the first of four professional titles in 1960 by winnig the
Sam Snead Festival. A year later, in 1961, he won the Seattle Open
and the Azalea Open in 1962. The year of 1965 placed Mr. Marr among
the elite of the professional golfing world. He captured the coveted
PGA Championship, was named to the Ryder Cup Team and elected PGA
Player of the Year. He was elected to the national Collegiate Hall
of Fame in 1977 and the Texas Golf Hall of Fame in 1978. He was the
appointed captian of the U.S. Ryder Cup Team in 1981 and was selected
for the Gold Tee Award presented by the Met (N.Y.) Golf Writers in
1990.
He and long time golfing partner Jay Riviere established a golf course
architectural firm in 1981 designing many courses in the greater Houston
area. Mr. Marr's business career also involves conducting clinics
for corporations.
He is married to Caroline (Tally) and has five children Elisabeth,
David Wayne, Tony and Tucker.
