Message From The Principal
Prospective students and parents,
"Teach me Goodness, Discipline and Knowledge" is the motto of both St. Thomas High School and the Congregation of St. Basil, an order of priests founded in Annonay, a small city in France in 1822 to educate young men. The Basilian Fathers humbly taught in Annonay, not realizing that in a few years one of their own students would eventually become the bishop of Toronto, Canada, and invite them to cross the Atlantic Ocean. Four Basilians accepted the bishop’s invitation to teach in the new world, and the Basilian Fathers grew all over Canada, the United States, Mexico and Colombia, ready and willing to teach young people goodness, discipline and knowledge wherever they encountered them. In 1900, the Basilian Fathers opened St. Thomas High School, thus founding what is the oldest all-boys Catholic college preparatory high school in southeast Texas.
St. Thomas is a community of students, teachers, parents, alumni and friends who support and encourage one another in learning, playing and growing together as Christians. Friendships made while at St. Thomas last a lifetime. This is obvious when one attends Round-Up, Homecoming or a class reunion.
Our young men feel comfortable and very much at home at St. Thomas as they are challenged and prepared to gain admission to excellent universities nationwide. To discover our spirit and pride, come see our school located in a booming part of Houston, located between Midtown, the Heights, River Oaks and Memorial Park. I invite you to meet our students and teachers. Walk around the campus, shaded by century-old trees, while you visit our learning resource center, science labs, counseling center, computer labs and gym. Take some time to stroll through the Moran Fine Arts Center that houses our auditorium, music, art and drama programs, plus computer labs and language classrooms. In our main building, spend time reflecting in the St. Thomas Aquinas Chapel and the spacious rotunda. We keep updating our campus to help us meet the challenges of our second St. Thomas century.
St. Thomas offers an academic program that is second to none, combined with a fine sports program, and a wide range of other activities designed to let each young man grow in goodness, discipline and knowledge. These words that are emblazoned on our school's crest are not just words - they are our way of life. We approach all of these activities with eyes of faith, for truly God can be encountered everywhere. There is a closeness and friendly spirit among the student body of 720 and staff of 68. Our reach extends into the community as well, as our students perform many hours of community service, which is one of our best traditions.
You can read about St. Thomas in a brochure, but to get a very complete picture of the school, I invite you to attend our Open House, which will be held at 1 p.m., Sunday, January 23, 2011, beginning in the Cemo Auditorium of the Moran Fine Arts Center. Visiting our campus during Open House provides you an opportunity to meet our outstanding administrators, teachers, coaches and students, as well as to tour our impressive facilities.
The High School Placement Test will be given from 8:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m., Saturday, January 29, 2011, on our campus. We hope you will be here for that test as you make St. Thomas your first choice for high school in Houston.
All of us look forward to meeting you.
Sincerely in Christ,
Rev. Patrick Fulton, C.S.B.
