He received his Bachelor's degree from the University of Houston and his Master's from Sam Houston State University. Jim's coaching career began at St. Anne's elementary school where he coached all sports for 10 years before arriving at St. Thomas in 1970. At. St. Thomas, Jim was the head track coach for 20 years, winning two state championships. He was the head freshman football coach for the same number of years and also coached freshman basketball for a period of time. During this time period, Jim was the counselor to freshmen and sophomore students. His guidance helped to form them into responsible young men. Jim's value to the St. Thomas sports program was introducing young students into the St. Thomas way of life, giving them the sound fundamentals in sports and in life, which they took with them throughout their St. Thomas days and beyond. His dedication to St. Thomas athletes and students is unparalleled. By coaching fall and spring sports teams, Jim spent 6 to 7 days a week, for approximately seven months of the school year, teaching these young men. Jim was so highly thought of by the students that the 1986 year book was dedicated to him. The dedication read "To Mr. Jim Schwarzbach our counselor, our coach, our leader, our friend." The lives of literally thousands of St. Thomas students have been
touched positively by Jim through his 20 plus years of coaching,
counseling and teaching of drivers' education. Jim truly teaches
these young men the St. Thomas values of "goodness, discipline
and knowledge.
