Golf claims state title

2012-04-24-golf-state-champsThe St. Thomas golf team entered Day 2 of the TAPPS State Golf Tournament with a tenuous 1 shot lead. Winning the school's first State Championship since 2005 would likely require a better score than the 310 that the team posted on the first day of the tournament. A better score is exactly what they posted by day's end, winning the tournament by 6 strokes over Antonian High School from San Antonio.

The Eagles' combined score of 616 included a 306 on the Day 2. Senior Richard Le and Junior Tommy Kherkher tied for 5th overall and were both named All-State golfers.

The balanced squad had gained notoriety around the state because of its consistency, winning multiple tournaments during the season. That consistency carried them to the title, the school's fourth since 2000 and first under head coach Billy Tuten.

"This team was on a mission from the beginning of the season," Athletic Director Mike Netzel said. "They continued their outstanding play when it mattered most, and we are tremendously proud of their accomplishments."
