Football Season Preview

Schedules: VARSITY  JUNIOR VARSITY   FRESHMEN

The Varsity Football team will open the 2012 season with a pair of scrimmages before traveling to Altair to play Rice Consolidated on August 31.  The Eagles won a TAPPS Playoff game on the same field last November.  Here's a preview of the 2012 season.

08/31/12  Eagles @ Rice Consolidated

The Raiders went 5-4 last year and did not qualify for the District 14-2A playoffs.  Sophomore quarterback Jordan Johnson took over at the end of last year and will lead the Raiders in 2012.  Leading rusher James Garner is back after tallying 771 yards last season.

09/07/12 Eagles @ Strake Jesuit

This game had been played as the season opener in recent years, but now moves to Week 1 with the way the 2012 calendar falls.  The Crusaders will look to bounce back from a 3-7 season with new head coach James Clancy.  Leading passer Tyler Schiro and rusher Jordan Underwood have both graduated.  The Eagles will seek their first win against the Crusaders since 1997.

09/14/12 vs. Santa Fe

A year after being shut out by the Indians at Granger Stadium, the Eagles traveled south to Santa Fe and exacted some revenge in 2011 with a 31-14 win.  The Indians finished the 2011 season 3-7 and just 1-5 in District 24-4A.

09/21/12 vs. Huffman Hargrave

The Falcons will pose a serious test for the Eagles in the host team's final game before opening district play.  Fresh off a 9-3 season where they reached the 3A Area Playoffs, the Falcons return leading passer Preston Townley, who threw for over 2,500 yards in 2011.  Their leading rusher, Darion Gray, will also be back.

10/5/12 @ St. Pius X*

For the 2nd consecutive season, the Eagles and Panthers will open TAPPS District 3-5A facing each other.  The teams split the 2011 series with each winning on the other's field.  The Panthers will be led by Kohl Stewart, the multi-sport star who has already committed to Texas A&M.  Stewart's favorite target, Damitri Morris, will be back at wide receiver for the Panthers, but leading rusher Kenneth Barrow graduated in May.

10/12/12 vs. Tomball Concordia Lutheran* (Homecoming)

The Crusaders are new to TAPPS 5A and exit a 14-1 season that ended with a 35-23 loss to Midland Christian in the 4A State Final.  A run-first team, the Crusaders amassed over 4,000 yards on the ground in 2011, but will not have leading passer Nathan Potter or their two leading rushers, Chance Gray and Eddie Brucculeri, all of whom graduated.

10/19/12 vs. Beaumont Kelly* (Reunion Weekend)

The Eagles and Bulldogs played a pair of lopsided games in 2011, with the home team winning each one quite handily.  The Bulldogs will bring back leading passer Will Darling, but lost running backs Nick Barber and O'Shea Kennebrew, as well as receiver Nick Schrapps.  Matching the success the team had in 2011, when they reached the State Final vs. Nolan Catholic, will be a tall task.

10/26/12 @ Tomball Concordia Lutheran*

The Eagles will make the trek north for their 2nd road district game.

11/2/12 @ Beaumont Kelly*

Parents and students are undoubtedly anticipating the annual trip along I-10 to Beaumont.  You will be hard-pressed to find friendlier hosts than the good golks of Monsignor Kelly Catholic High School.

11/9/12 vs. St. Pius X* (Senior Night)

Two years ago, the Eagles fell 33-28 to the Panthers to close the 2010 season on Senior Night.  In 2011, the Eagles spoiled the Panthers' Senior Night festivities, winning by a score of 42-13.  One thing you can count on when these teams square off is that the game will be memorable.
