St. Thomas High School Named in Top 50 Catholic Secondary Schools for Fourth Consecutive Year
November 10, 2008 - For the fourth consecutive year, the Catholic High School Honor Roll has named St. Thomas High School as one of its top 50 secondary schools in America, recognizing the school as demonstrating competence in each area of measurement: academics, Catholic identity and civic education.
In its five years, the Honor Roll has seen over 50 percent of America’s nearly 1,300 Catholic high schools participate at least once. St. Thomas High School received this honor in 2005, 2006, 2007 and again this year, 2008, in which nearly 300 schools completed the three detailed surveys that measure a school’s adherence to the Church’s educational mission.
“The Catholic Church has a great history of being involved in education that dates back centuries to the establishment of the first universities. St. Thomas High School is proud to continue this essential tradition, faithful to the Church, to educate young men in goodness, discipline and knowledge. We continue to respond to the challenge of Catholic education to educate the whole person in body, mind and spirit. We are humbled at this honor and will continue to strive for the incorporation of Gospel values in all we do: academic, athletic and artistic, as a Christian community,” said Principal Rev. John B. Huber, C.S.B., Ed.D.
The best schools demonstrate a balanced excellence, which includes an active Catholic culture, sound college preparation and integration of Church teaching in all departments. These schools also display sound moral, catechetical and civic formation that prepares students for vocations in the world as political, religious, scientific, and business leaders.
St. Thomas High School, operated by the Basilian Fathers, is the oldest all-male college preparatory in southeast Texas. Since 1900, the Basilian Fathers, and the school’s faculty and staff have been a leader in Catholic education following its motto “Teach Me Goodness, Discipline and Knowledge.”
More than 11,000 young men have graduated from St. Thomas High School since 1900, including a Pulitzer prize winner, a Medal of Honor recipient, Catholic bishops, a U.S. congressman, a mayor of Houston, Masters and PGA championship winners, a director of the FBI, a world renowned sculptor/artist, a major college football offensive coordinator, and many businessmen, including the former CEO of Wells Fargo as well some of the best known restaurant owners in the greater Houston area.
The National Catholic High School Honor Roll is a list of the top 50 Catholic high schools in the United States, where schools are examined on the criteria of academic excellence, Catholic identity, and civic education. The purpose of the Honor Roll is to recognize and encourage excellence in Catholic secondary education, and is a resource for parents, schools, donors, and colleges.
The Honor Roll is an independent project of the Acton Institute, an international research and educational organization. The Honor Roll was produced in consultation with a national advisory board comprised of Catholic college presidents and Catholic scholars.
