This Week in St. Thomas Athletics
February 02, 2010 - BASKETBALL
The Eagles capped off an undefeated run through district play with a 68-48 win over Houston Christian. In fact, both the JV and Freshmen teams also finished undefeated in district play. St. Thomas finished the regular season with a record of 24-13, winning twelve of their last fourteen games and only suffering one loss since the new year began. The team was led by sophomore leading scorer Christian Sanders and senior Chase Kammerer, who is healthy after battling injuries all season. Sophomore posts Aaron Durley and Jeremy King and sophomore guard Carl Culberson have come on strong as of late. The Eagles will host a first round playoff game on Saturday, February 13, at 7:00 p.m. against an opponent from Dallas to be determined.
GOLF
The Eagles finished in third place out of sixteen teams at the Willis ISD Golf Invitational. Richard Le and Michael Rogers both finished in the top ten individually. This is the Eagles' third consecutive top three finish in a tournament.
RUGBY
The rugby team kicked off the 2010 season with a 33-12 victory over New Orleans Jesuit. The Eagles, coming off three straight Western Region championships and a 7th place finish in the nation, bolted out to a 26-0 lead at the half. Three players making their rugby debut were featured in the starting lineup: Chase Williams, Thomas Cordes and Logan Stryk. Junior Rob Mabry scored two tries for the Eagles. The Eagles take to the pitch again on Friday, February 5 at home against Austin Westlake.
SOCCER
The Eagles secured a playoff spot last week with a 3-1 win over St. Pius X. Senior James Williams had two goals and senior keeper Alex Rusciano was solid in goal. They now travel to Dallas for a first round TAPPS 5A playoff game against Plano John Paul II. The game will be played on Saturday at 12:00 p.m.
SWIMMING
The Eagles finished in second place at both the South Regional Championships in San Antonio and the Houston City Championships. Ten swimmers, a record number for St. Thomas, qualified for the State Championship meet this weekend in Conroe. The 200 Medley Relay, 200 Free Relay, and 400 Free Relay teams also qualfied for the meet. The swim team was recently featured in a write-up in the Houston Chronicle: click here to read the story.
WRESTLING
The Eagles continued their winning ways, finishing second at the TAPPS State Meet in Dallas. The wrestling team won duals vs. Bishop Dunne, Addison Trinity Christian and First Baptist Academy before losing to eventual state champion and nationally ranked Bishop Lynch. The Eagles will now compete in their final matches of the season this Friday and Saturday at Prep State hosted by Episcopal High School.
