No one in academia, not to mention restaurants and retail, athletics and entertainment, Main Street to Wall Street, had any idea that by the Ides of March and into mid-May the United States would be in the sort of footing that anyone under the age of 75 understood only from their parents and the writings of icons like Roosevelt and Churchill.

The onset of COVID-19 upended American life through exponential growth – gradually and then all at once. Unemployment soared historically high, the future impossible to forecast.

Consistent throughout the supreme trial is the St. Thomas community that extends through generations and beyond zip codes. An unmatched college preparatory alumni network remains relentlessly aligned while selflessly helping those in the greatest need. It’s our Basilian DNA. Now more than ever, Eagles uplifting Eagles is a strength uniting a brotherhood unlike any other.

“Through good times and in times of steep challenge, the Eagle Family answers the call,” vice president for advancement  Mark deTranaltes ’83 says. “None of us has seen a situation quite like the coronavirus in our lifetime, and it gives me immense pride to see how our alumni have stepped up with such compassion and sacrifice. Though it’s remarkable, I am not surprised at all – that is our identity.”

As the pandemic continues to evolve, and the campus currently remains silent, St. Thomas maintains a model of togetherness amid division. deTranaltes and the advancement team are committed to supporting and showcasing exemplary Eagle alumni business owners who continue to adjust their daily operations, adapting as Gov. Greg Abbott implements a series of reopening plans.

St. Thomas alumni who are operating during COVID-19 are encouraged to email Advancement@sths.org with the following information:

  • name and class year
  • business name and website
  • brief description of your business
  • logo and/or photo(s) to best promote your business

Please empower our St. Thomas network. Show your gratitude to those keeping our community resilient while returning to robust. Every effort counts.
